The United Nations is a multi-national organization whose membership is composed of almost every nation on Earth. The charter setting up the United Nations was signed in 1945. The purposes of the United Nations as outlined in the UN publication Basic Facts about the United Nations are: "To Maintain international peace and security: To Develop friendly relations among nations; To Cooperate internationally in solving international economic, social , cultural, and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; To Be A Centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these common ends." The major organs of the United Nations have published a vast amount of material, much of which is valuable for use in post World War II historical and social research.

The West Campus Library has a significant number of United Nations Documents, consisting of reports of the Preparatory Commission 1945 - 1946, Official Records and Sales Publications, covering the period from 1946 - 1993.  Documents after 1993 are available either at Olin Library, through the United Nations Documents website, or the United Nations' Dag Hammarskjold Library.  Official Records are published by the principal organs of the United Nations and consist of records of meetings, supplements, and annexes. Sales Publications include reference material, reports, working papers and documents other than Official Records.

UN documents are best searched using indexes and bibliographies, such as the Year Book of the United Nations or the Index of Proceedings usually published at the end of each session. Other United Nations research tools are available at the West Campus Library, Olin Library, and online.

The West Campus Library may be reached by e-mail or by telephone 935-9889 for assistance in locating a specific United Nations publication. Please contact the Help Desk in Olin Library for assistance in using UN reference sources.
