Using the Gaylord Music Library Collection

The Gaylord Music Library serves the music information needs of the Washington University community as part of the Olin Library System. The Music Library honors General Clifford A. Gaylord who was, until his death in 1952, a member of the Washington University Corporation. With the completion of the Gaylord building in 1960, the music library found a new home and has since developed into a major resource supporting research through master's and doctoral level programs.

The Gaylord Music Library collection seeks to meet the academic music information needs of the Washington University community by providing a comprehensive collection of music books, scores, sound recordings, videos & DVDs, and research collections develop around faculty and student projects. The Music Library holds (both fully cataloged and in process) over 110,000 books and scores, 45,500 recordings and tapes, 5,200 microform items and more than 45,000 pieces of sheet music.

  • Major composers' complete editions
  • Monumental collections
  • Study and playing scores
  • Chamber music with instrumental parts

Strong holdings have been acquired in Americana, Festschriften, early music, opera, and music literature.

Using the West Campus Collection

The LP collection and some other, lesser used materials are housed at the West Campus Library. Materials at West Campus are available for use on site at the West Campus Library, can be checked out there, or can be requested to be sent to Gaylord through the Libraries' online catalog by using the "Request" option.
