Desk Reserves
The purpose of Desk Reserve is to make materials considered to be in great demand for a course more readily available to everyone in the course. Therefore, the loan period for reserves is limited to two hours, one day or three days. Electronic materials are available on ERes.
Finding Materials on Desk Reserve
You can look for materials on course reserve in the online catalog or at the front desk of the Art and Architecture Library. There are two ways to search online: by course number or by instructor last name. At the front desk of the Art and Architecture Library, there are three binders in which you will find printouts of course reserve materials organized by discipline and instructor last name. You will need to copy down the call number of the reserve item and bring it to the front desk. Staff will then retrieve the item and check it out to you.
The online catalog can also tell you if a reserve item is checked out and when it is due back. If the item is checked out, doing a title search can identify other copies of the item that are not on reserve. If you do not need the item immediately or would like to use an item longer than the assigned circulation time, consider requesting it from MOBIUS. You may also find earlier editions of the item that would be acceptable for your research.
Checking Out and Returning Materials on Desk Reserve
Because reserve materials are used by many people, it is especially important that they are returned on time. It is your responsibility to know the date and time your reserve materials are due, and to return your reserve items to the correct library. You can view the due dates of items checked out to you at My Catalog. You can return reserve materials even when the library is closed. Consult staff for the location of book drops and other drop-off locations.
Fines are assessed for late return of materials. If an item is more than a few days overdue, the item will be recalled and a hold will be placed on your library account until you return the item. Long overdue reserve materials may be marked as lost. You will be charged a replacement fee. You may also be billed if a reserve item is returned with missing material or is returned damaged.
Helpful Hints for Materials on Desk Reserve
If your instructor tells you that an item is on reserve, but you can't find the item in the online catalog or binders, please ask library staff. They can often give information about the status of an item or suggest other options for obtaining the material.
Tell staff if an item is being used heavily. We can shorten loan periods, ask the instructor for more copies of the material, and try other options to ensure that everyone enjoys equal access to reserve items.
Electronic Reserves (ERes)
Through Electronic Reserves (ERes) students have 24 hour online access to course readings. Readings may be viewed, printed or downloaded. Hard copy materials are placed on Desk Reserve at the Art and Architecture Library.
