Proxy Server Login for Off-Campus Access to many resources below
- PubMed: The PubMed redesign which I mentioned last month has now happened. I don't think you'll have too much trouble using this and several things are actually easier to do, in my opinion. Remember to check the "Advanced Search" option and scroll to the bottom of the screen for resources that used to be in tabs or links at the top or side. There's a 23 minute webcast available if you'd like an overview: https://webmeeting.nih.gov/p15252398/. Help documentation has been updated. Or, ask Ruth if you would like help. More help: see Kristi Holmes' post from Becker Library.
Although not specifically related to the redesign, I think this is a good time to remind you that there are several possible ways to access PubMed. Here are a few links:- PubMed - with Get it! buttons and formatted for off-campus use for Danforth Campus folks. You will be prompted to login with your WUSTL key if you are working off-campus. This is the link that is available at most spots in the Library website.
- PubMed - with Get it! buttons AND Becker Library buttons and formatted for off-campus use for Danforth Campus folks. You will be prompted to login with your WUSTL key if you are working off-campus.
- My own choice is to use My NCBI and format my own preferences for filters, outside tools (including WU Get it! buttons [Washington University, St. Louis moufgllib]), linkout preferences (including Becker Library buttons [Washington University Medical School Becker Library, MO wustlmlib]), etc. My NCBI is also used to save searches and have search alerts sent to you. About My NCBI
- RefWorks news: RefWorks now offers access to Alumni!, as long as WU Libraries continue to subscribe to RefWorks.
Also, the Social Work Library is offering quick sessions on how to export your PubMed citations into your RefWorks account. No registration needed. Goldfarb building (NOT Goldfarb Plant Growth Facility), third floor, G330, computer lab, Thurs., Nov. 12, 12:15-12:30 OR Wed., Dec. 16, 12:15-12:30. If you cannot attend, other options include asking Ruth or checking out the documentation: Exporting references from PubMed into RefWorks [Note: These instructions have not been updated for the PubMed redesign but they give you the gist of the process. Step 1 is still choose your citations. Instructions for steps 2-4 are slightly changed; click on Send to, choose File, choose format Medline, and then follow steps 5-10 as on the RefWorks help file which I expect will be updated soon.] - Collection merger complete: Biology Library books and journals are now completely interfiled into the Olin Library collection, mostly on level B. There are no longer any temporary shelving areas.
- Telomeres, Telomerase and Cancer, by Carol W. Greider and Elizabeth H. Blackburn. Scientific American, February 1996, Vol. 274 Issue 2, p92. Because of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Scientific American has made an html version freely available; the pdf version with illustrations is available to WU users by searching in the Scientific American Archive online.
- Two interesting links:
- The Trouble with Wikipedia as a Source for Medical Information A thorough review of many issues surrounding Wikipedia for scientific or medical information. I have mixed feelings about knowing that doctors and medical students use it so heavily. I like the quote that "Wikipedia is the best source to start with in your research, but should never be the last one."
- NuMBerS (numerical methods for biosciences students) Designed to underpin the teaching of numerical methods for the biosciences. It is built as a series of toolkits, some of which are web-based and interactive, while others are printable files. - Becker to host Scopus session for authors, Dec. 1: Becker Medical Library is pleased to offer a lunch-and-learn workshop for authors, featuring Rebecca Brown from Scopus. Pizza and beverages will be provided, courtesy of Scopus. Do you find yourself asking these questions?
- Who is citing my work?
- How is my research being used?
- How can I identify potential research collaborators?
- What metrics can I use to make my grant application more competitive?
TIME: Noon to 1:00 pm
LOCATION: Holden Auditorium at the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center
Registration (http://tinyurl.com/ykzmagh) is not required but highly encouraged in order to ensure a seat, free pizza/refreshments, and your name added to a drawing for a free iPod plus other giveaways. Registration is limited to 75 attendees. More info.
Note: Scopus is NOT available on the WU Danforth Campus but DBBS graduate students, faculty with joint appointments in a School of Medicine department, and people who travel to the medical campus can use Scopus. Contact Ruth if you have questions about that please.
[ http://library.wustl.edu/subjects/life/reprints/ ] This PubMed search link will retrieve most WU Biology Dept. researchers' publications, plus a few in biomedical engineering, chemistry, etc. (Strategy is biology [ad] AND washington university [ad] AND 63130 [ad]).
