- Are you an NIH-funded author? If so, you may want to try to attend an NIH Policy Presentation, Thursday, Dec. 11, 1-2 pm, Becker Medical Library, Room 601A. Please email Cathy Sarli sarlic@wustl.edu to reserve your seat. Some authors have been receiving requests from NIH to document their compliance with the policy so this aspect will be covered also. More info. You can also send any questions or concerns in this area to Ruth Lewis or Cathy Sarli.
- Biology Library News for December and January will be combined and distributed around February 2nd. Meanwhile, if you want to check new book lists, etc., please check the Biology Library News blog. Thank you.
- Web of Science now 1980+. Thanks to a joint purchase of the Becker Medical Library, the Social Work Library, the Law Library, and the Olin Library System, additional years are now available for Web of Science: you now have access to 1980 to the present, rather than 1988 to the present. This includes Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Of course you can still get information about older articles using the Cited Reference Search, if they are included in the reference lists of 1980+ articles. (The Century of Science, 1900+, file is certainly still on the wish list but adding 8 years was all our budget could support this year.)
- Beyond the Gene: The Nov. 11, 2008 issue of Science Times section of the New York Times has several articles which may interest biofolk:
Now: The Rest of the Genome
The Promise and Power of RNA
Scientists and Philosophers Find That ‘Gene’ Has a Multitude of Meanings
A Bestiary of RNA
Mapping the Epigenome
Genetics Glossary
Thoughts on Genes - Interesting reading: Heather Joseph: Getting the message across (Journal of Cell Biology 183(3):368-169 2008) Heather Joseph was interviewed about her work with SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). "What can scientists do to help the SPARC cause...They can also help by making informed choices about where they publish their work. Journals with short embargo periods (under 12 months) like the JCB are great choices—they demonstrate that the high quality journals can thrive while proving faster access to a wider audience than just those institutions who can afford to subscribe. The JCB is setting a terrific example in another way—by providing access to its articles under a Creative Commons license, it is ensuring that not only can the material in the articles that it publishes be accessed, but also that it can be used in new and innovative ways by the research community."
- Recent Nature Specials look interesting and they are open access too: Darwin 200 | Finance in Crisis (and what it means to science)
- Seed Magazine has published a series of articles on the State of Science 2008. Highlights include the Fundamentals: Publishing ..."digital publishing is turning this model upside down, and the landscape of science is shifting beneath exponentially accumulating digital data, much of it available for free online. Although the final outcome of these changes is unclear and some believe peer review itself is threatened, one benefit is apparent: Scientists are discovering new ways to collaborate and communicate....",
Intellectual Property,
Informatics, Money, and Public Perception.
John Wilbanks Science Commons "...Who has rights to science? Wilbanks isn't suggesting that we throw "everything into the public domain." But for science to truly work, the law must recognize what Wilbanks calls "fundamental rights: the right to know and to build new knowledge...."
Carl Bergstrom Eigenfactor "...If we can map science, we can help researchers get their bearings, move efficiently among fields in their interdisciplinary endeavors, and find what they need to be reading."
The Scientist in 2008, by Steven Shapin. Bigger, Better, Faster, by J. Craig Venter. And more. - Sally Elgin in the news: Wash. U. professor takes genetics research to wider student audience St. Louis Post Dispatch, Nov. 18. 2008.
- Now available: ITeach fall 2008 newsletter
- Coming changes in PubMed searching: Advanced Search will soon no longer be a beta site. "In the near future the tabs for Limits, Preview/Index, History, Clipboard, and Details will be removed from the basic PubMed pages." It looks like those functions will still be available in Advanced search but displayed differently. More info.
This PubMed search link will retrieve most WU Biology Dept. researchers' publications, plus a few in biomedical engineering, chemistry, etc. (Strategy is biology [ad] AND washington university [ad] AND 63130 [ad]).
