- Intersession Hours [December 20, 2007 - January 13, 2008]
Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm
Saturday - Sunday closed
Also closed Dec. 24-25 and Dec.31-Jan.1
Regular hours resume Monday, January 14, 2008; the library will be closed Sunday-Monday, Jan. 20-21. - Are you teaching next semester? If so, please let us know if you want items on reserve. Please submit your reserve needs any time. Your questions and suggestions for streamlining this process are always welcome!
- ITeach 2008: The Libraries are once again co-sponsoring ITeach with The Teaching Center and Arts & Sciences Computing. ITeach 2008: Student Learning, Teaching and Technology will be held January 10, 2008. Please see the ITeach 2008 website for more information and to register.
- SciFinder Web: Sometime during December, SciFinder Scholar will be available campus-wide as a web-based product. If you use SciFinder Scholar, watch Biology Library News or Library What's New for more information.
- Get it! menus are changing but services continue unchanged. More info. If you have bookmarked Citation Linker, please change your links because we have a new Citation Linker page.
- Library toolbar now available: Quick links to many library resources and several useful "right click" options are available from our new LibX toolbar. More information and download are available at http://library.wustl.edu/research/toolbar/. We welcome your comments and suggestions for improvement!
- CRCNetBase trial access: We have trial access to all the CRCnetbase databases through Dec. 20th. Mostly this is CRC Press/Taylor & Francis monographs, handbooks and reference books available and searchable online. We have not decided which specific sets we might purchase beyond the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Dictionary of Natural Products, BIOSCIENCEnetBASE, NEUROSCIENCEnetBASE, and PlantSCIENCEnetBASE will probably be most interesting to biofolk. Please contact Ruth Lewis if you think some of these sets might be important additions to our collection. Thank you.
- PubMed - Google Scholar comparison: Many biofolk use Google or Google Scholar first, so you may be interested in this article: Comparing test searches in PubMed and Google Scholar, by Mary Shultz, J Med Libr Assoc 2007 October; 95(4): 442-445. There's no clear recommendation, since both tools retrieved unique items. Here's a snip from the Results section:
Across all searches, Google Scholar retrieved a total of 247 citations, 125 (50.61%) of which were unique to Google Scholar. Analysis revealed the following characteristics:
- Thirty-two items (12.96%) retrieved by Google Scholar were formats other than journal articles.
- Some unique Google Scholar items (10 items, 4.05%) appeared in journals not indexed by PubMed.
- Google Scholar covered a wider date range and returned 4 items (1.62%) older than 1950 that were not in PubMed.
- Google Scholar retrieved items based on its ability to search the full text of many articles rather than solely on citation data.
- There has been lots of open-access news this month; here is a small selection:
- OA, OK?, an editorial, by Richard Gallagher in The Scientist, Nov. 2007
- Chronology of the NIH Public Access Policy, compiled at WU Becker Medical Library
- Maximizing Productivity and Recognition, Part 1: Publication, Citation, and Impact, Science, November 2, 2007. I've seen many columns like this one over the years but few have advised scientists to consider open-access, the way this one does: "...To make your future work as accessible as possible, publish in journals that are indexed by ISI and in journals that allow full-text open access. The easier it is for others to find and use your work, the better...." Cited in Advice to young scientists (Peter Suber's Open Access news)
- Many new open-access journals announced at http://www.bentham.org/open/ and http://frontiersin.org/neuroscience/ - Biofolk in the news: Bob Thach and Brian Allan are quoted in The Missourian: Nov. 16, 2007 Number of tick-borne diseases doubles across Missouri
- Best Science Books of 2007:
Titles are linked to local catalog records for easy retrieval.

- A single page Genetics Crib Sheet, available in GIF or PDF, from Seed Magazine
- Alternative interfaces for PubMed searches, by Isabelle de Kaenel. Seen in post from David Rothman - Copyright and authors rights: I've been reading and thinking about copyright lately. I'm in a small group that has begun work on copyright information pages for WU. You will probably hear more about that in coming months, because we aim to address your issues and questions! I thought these 3 gems were worth sharing this month. I hope you find them relevant and interesting.
- Cory Doctorow's column about Creative Commons, from Locus online, Nov. 2007
- Law professor estimates $12.4 million in liability during an average day! - Infringement nation: copyright reform and the law/norm gap [13 page pdf] by John Tehranian.
