- Journal budget cuts for biology: A collections budget shortfall for the coming fiscal year is expected. Each discipline has been asked to cut 12% (or more) from their budget. Our response in biology will be to make the following changes for 2010 subscription year:

- Going online-only for Annual Reviews? Going online-only for Annual Reviews would be a cost savings. This idea was rejected a few years ago but more people are more comfortable with ejournals now. My biology collection advisors tell me they only use the online version. Even though Annual Reviews articles are long, they can still be printed very efficiently because (I find) the pdf printed at 2 pages per sheet is still readable and of course saves paper. There is also an html version for easy reading or scanning on the screen. If a few titles must be kept in paper, please let me know which ones; otherwise I will OK going online-only for biology titles such as Annual Review of...: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell and developmental biology, Ecology evolution and systematic, Entomology, Genetics, Genomics and human genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Nutrition, Pathology, Pharmacology & toxicology, Physiology, Phytopathology, Plant biology. Do let Ruth Lewis know if you have concerns about a specific title. Thank you.
- NIH Public Access Policy classes: Additional sessions have now been scheduled at Becker Medical Library, room 601A. This provides an overview of the NIH Public Access Policy including the steps involved in complying with the policy and how to demonstrate compliance. Upcoming Class Dates:
Wednesday, 05/13/2009 10:00-11:00 AM
Wednesday, 07/15/2009 10:00-11:00 AM
Please pre-register at https://aladdin.wustl.edu/medlib/Projecti.nsf/classcalendar
News Note: The NIH Public Access Policy, which was due to expire this year, has now been made permanent by the 2009 Consolidated Appropriations Act, signed into law in mid-March. - Interesting links for authors and researchers:
- Authorship and Publication Resources from Program for the Ethical and Responsible Conduct of Science and Scholarship Reference Library
- Impact Factor Wars: Episode V_The Empire Strikes Back (J Child Neurol 2009; 24; 260) - a short editorial about impact factors
- New guide for Assessing the Impact of Research is now available from Becker Library. I think much of Strategies for Enhancing the Impact of Research is relevant for all disciplines, not just biomedical. More info
- Ways to Use Journal Articles Published by Elsevier: A Practical Guide - I wish all publishers were as clear about this subject; of course individual author/Elsevier arrangements are probably negotiated too, so this does not override your own publication contracts.
- Elsevier Journals that submit to PubMed Central the accepted author manuscript for authors reporting NIH funded research - MIT adopts a university-wide OA mandate! For a list of other institutions with similar policies and for details on the policy see Registry of Open Access Repository Material Archiving Policies
- Special Libraries Association has produced a list of the Top 100 Journals in Biology and Medicine in connection with its centennial.
