Online Catalog Search Strategies

  • To search for bibliographies and works about a typeface designer, do a subject search (e.g., Caslon, William or Rogers, Bruce or Baskerville, John).

  • To search for works printed by a particular person:

    1. Select the Advanced Search index and enter the name you are searching for (e.g., Caslon, William or Rogers, Bruce or Baskerville, John).
    2. Choose which field you would like to limit your keyword search to from the pull-down menu , i.e., Any field, Author, Title, etc.
    3. Enter the word "printer" into the cell marked Type of Artist/Contributor.
    4. Click the button marked Submit to retrieve results. Note: You may retrieve some false hits. In this case, try clicking on the option with the term printer following it, e.g., Baskerville, John, 1706-1775. printer.

  • When a modern-era book names the typeface it uses in the text, Special Collections quotes the statement and adds a searchable Local Term to the catalog record. To search for works printed in a named typeface using the local term:

    1. Select the Advanced Search index and enter the name of the typeface you are researching. A search on Bodoni in "Any field" will retrieve 125 hits, searching on words in title, subject, notes, etc.
    2. In the cell marked Artistic Aspect/Place enter the terms "type design" (entering the single word "type" will also work).
    3. Click the button marked Submit to retrieve results. This search will narrow Bodoni to 19 hits.
